I've played a few Reconnaissance games with my old man now and decided we wanted to try a Blitz Conquest. After going through the Rulebook and playing it for about an hour we decided to call it quits. My character was still level 3 with no way to gain any fame, other than fighting cities or Draconum, all clearly too powerful for me. My dad was level 6 at the time and leading by a landslide.Despite having really enjoyed this game the first few times, this was a real downer. The Reconnaissance scenario has a great buildup (lots of tiles, fixed order from easy to harder) and plenty of opportunities to gather Fame. The Blitz scenario started us off with 2 Mage Towers and many swamps right in the first 3 tiles (3 column build), which caused both of us to still be level 2 by the first Day's end. Due to some lucky draws at Night, my dad managed to get 2 levels that Night, while I got stuck in a swamp for 2 turns.
After going through the Walkthrough, Rulebook and Scenario Book again, I still have a few questions.
The Reconnaissance scenario has a fixed buildup for the green and core tiles. The Blitz Conquest scenario told us to shuffle a mere 6 green tiles (top of stack) and 3 core tile (2 city, bottom of stack). Since we used a Column build (or whatever it's called), we only had a 3 by 3 (+starting tile) map. In our experience, this left us with far too little oppurtunity to gather Fame before we were be forced to fight Draconums or Mages, each requiring Ice/Fire Block/Siege (which neither of us could have gathered up untill that point). There were no Dungeons or Spawning Grounds on the map to repeatedly enter, only 2 Monster Dens - which don't spawn unlimited enemies - which my dad managed to get to before me.
The 3 Column build in the Rulebook displays 3 starting tiles connected to the start tile, whereas the Blitz Conquest scenario mentions only using 6 greens. Were we supposed to first place tiles #1-3 in a random or specific way to the starting tile, BEFORE randomly shuffling 6 of the remaining greens or is it as we did...? The Walkthrough and Rulebook are not clear on this. The scenario felt far too small now, with too much difficulty right at the start and too few Fame opportunities.
Is a regular Conquest perhaps easier? Should we be using a Wedge shaped map instead?
The second question I have is about the Tactic card (I forgot the name) that allows you to put 3 cards randomly from your discard pile into your deck when this is empty. Can you do this while drawing at the end of your turn? (I.e. your Deed deck is empty but you're still supposed to draw a few more cards to fill your hand.) Can you draw cards, then use this Tactic to put three cards in your deck and then immediately draw more to fill your hand?
